PRESS RELEASE

Making happy homes is a priority to two local groups here in Wilmington, Children at Heart Adoption Services, Inc. andPaysage Interiors. After a fun few months of creating a new room, Children at Heart and Paysage are ready to reveal the redesigned space that has come to be all from a simple wish posted on Facebook.

When Paysage asked for their fans’ wish lists on June 22, 2011, the Facebook post caught the eye of Erica Willock, assistant director of Children at Heart.  "We had recently moved into a new office on Front Street, and were very much in need of furniture for our birthmother support group space.  I decided I had nothing to lose, so I shared our needs with Paysage," said Willock.

Paysage’s designer Melissa Sutton had a special place in her heart for this wish, as Melissa was adopted by a wonderful family in North Carolina, and knows that non-profits, such as Children at Heart, can change the lives of many families for the better. Melissa, keeping in mind the purpose of the room, redesigned and created a new look and feel for what was once a cold and dreary office space.  Willock said, "It was wonderful how Paysage designed a space that would be not only comfortable and beautiful, but also very conducive to the kind of therapy that would be going on there. They truly cared about our work.”

Since 1995, Children at Heart has facilitated international adoptions, placing close to 500 orphaned children with US families.  In January of this year they started a domestic adoption program specifically aimed at helping birthmothers from the Southeastern NC area.  "We realized that there really were no agencies anywhere near Wilmington," stated Janice Bergeron, director of Children at Heart.  "Given the amount of contact we've received from birthmothers over the years, it became clear that our help is needed here."

Additionally, with the assistance of one local birthmother, Children at Heart founded a monthly birthmother support group - a first for this area.  "We had space for the meetings at our office, but the only furniture we had was a hand-me-down conference table that was in the office when we moved in.  It really wasn't appropriate for what we were using the space for, but it was all we had until Paysage stepped in," said Bergeron.

Children at Heart hosted an open house fundraising event for the revealing of the newly designed room on Friday September, 23rd.

Updates on our Kazakhstan adoption program:
Notice from the Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in NYC
(where CAH files are submitted)

May 2010: The Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in New York would like to inform that the Government of Kazakhstan continues to streamline and upgrade its international adoption system and to that end Kazakhstan has joined the Hague Convention on International Adoption. Having joined the Convention, the Republic of Kazakhstan, as prescribed, started the process of bringing its national legislation, including the Marriage and Family Code, in compliance with the Convention requirements.  In this regard and to avoid any mistakes and confusion in the process of building the dossiers for prospective adoptive families due to the ongoing legislation reform, the Consulate General temporarily suspends the acceptance of dossiers for adoption until further announcement.  The Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in New York apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.

Notice from the US Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs, Office of Children's Issues.

October 2010:
Kazakhstan will become a party to the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption (Convention) on November 1, 2010. Government of Kazakhstan stated it will not accept any new intercountry adoption dossiers until it completes adoption reforms, which is expected to be March 2011, at the earliest.

We will post more information here when we have it - we are hopeful that the Consulate will accept dossiers sometime soon.  All of the CAH families whose dossiers were sent to Kazakhstan in May 2010 have successfully completed their adoptions, and are now home with their beautiful children (none of our dossiers were returned from Kazakhstan!) - see above on this page for a list of children recently adopted through our Kazakhstan program. Please contact Janice, the director of Children at Heart, at 910.763.4414 if you have questions on when you should start working on your adoption in Kazakhstan.
