Why Children At Heart was started...

While adopting our daughter in February of 1994 (pictured to the right, in 2011), my husband and I witnessed the plight of the children we had to leave behind in the orphanage.  Knowing that we could not adopt all of the world's orphaned children pointed us toward creating our own adoption agency.

Beginning in 1995, Children at Heart had facilitated solely international adoptions, but due to an increased number of calls received at our NC office by local birthmothers seeking adoption services, the Spring of 2011 became the time we started a Domestic Adoption Program. We discontinued our International Adoption programs in 2016. We felt that it was important for us to offer our services to women in need in North Carolina.   We have recently received inquiries from birthmothers in upstate NY, so we are now available to women in that area, as well.

   What makes us different...

Having adopted five children with my husband, I know what it is like to go through the adoption process - before, during and after.  We help our adoptive parents through every step of the paperwork process. We are just an office visit, phone call, or email away. We want our adoptive parents to feel comfortable contacting us with any questions or concerns they might have - it is extremely important to us that the lines of communication are always open. During the paperwork process, if two weeks go by that we haven't heard from our adoptive parents who are working on home study or profile paperwork, we will check in with them to make sure things are still going smoothly.  Families waiting in our domestic program are encouraged to call or email any time to check in once they are available to birthmothers - we know how difficult it can be to wait during the adoption process, and we want to do anything we can to help support our adoptive families during that difficult time.  Contact us any time!

We are a small, family-run agency. I, Janice, am the Executive Director and Erica, my daughter, is the Assistant Director. We each read every email that is sent to the office, and discuss every phone call that we receive. We have frequent meetings to go over the status of all of our pending adoptions, which allows us to get to know all of our adoptive parents on a first-name basis.  We are here to give adoptive families the direction and support that they need.  In addition to Erica and myself, we also have a number social workers throughout NY and NC who are ready to work with families in those States who need home study visits.

Our network of adoptive families are always willing to assist with any questions you might have - before, during or after the adoption.  We provide all families interested in adopting thru our agency with a list of families who have adopted thru our domestic program, along with their contact information.  Families can ask for an updated reference list at any time. We encourage anyone interested in our program to contact our references - they can answer questions about our program, and they can also provide support while you are waiting to adopt, as well as after placement.

When working with birthmothers, Erica and I form a personal relationship with them, and that relationship is ongoing after the placement of their child.  We work with birthmothers to help them gain access to services in our community if they have needs we cannot meet, and provide them with support and encouragement to achieve their goals, above and beyond the placement of their child with an adoptive family.  We host a birthmother support group meeting on a monthly basis, and encourage all of our birthmothers (and those who are considering adoption for their child) to attend - the meeting is open to birthmothers who worked with other agencies to place their children, as well.  We care very much for our birthmothers and many look forward to providing support to new birthmothers thru our support group.

We truly care about all of our adoptive families and birthparents, and our hope is to form a lasting relationship with each of them!
