A note from the directors of

Children at Heart -
Janice and Mark Bergeron

Children At Heart is a Hague accredited, 501(c)(3) non-profit adoption agency, founded in 1995. We are approved in the state of NY and licensed in the state of NC to facilitate domestic and international adoptions for all US citizens living in any state, or abroad. We also provide home study, post-placement, and post-adoption services for NY and NC residents. Children At Heart is a member of JCICS.

Why Children At Heart was started...

While adopting our daughter in February of 1994 (pictured to the right, in 2011), we witnessed the plight of the children we had to leave behind in the orphanage. The haunting images of the orphans replayed in our minds as we contemplated how to help them. Knowing that we could not adopt all of the world's orphaned children pointed us toward creating our own adoption agency. Our goal is to find loving families for these orphaned children and to provide humanitarian assistance to those children who are not adopted.

Since 1995, Children at Heart had facilitated solely international adoptions, but due to an increased number of calls received at our NC office by local birthmothers seeking adoption services, the Spring of 2011 became the time to form a Domestic Adoption Program. We felt that it was important for us to offer our services to women in need in the Southeastern North Carolina region.   We have recently received inquiries from birthmothers in upstate NY, so we are now available to women in that area, as well.

What makes us different...

Since we, the directors, have adopted five children ourselves, we know what it is like to go through the adoption process - before, during and after.  We help our adoptive parents through every step of the paperwork process. We are just an office visit, phone call, or email away. We want our adoptive parents to feel comfortable contacting us with any questions or concerns they might have - it is extremely important to us that the lines of communication are always open. During the paperwork process, if two weeks go by that we haven't heard from our adoptive parents who are working on home study or profile paperwork, we will check in with them to make sure things are still going smoothly.  Families waiting in our domestic program are encouraged to call or email any time to check in once they are available to birthmothers - we know how difficult it can be to wait during the adoption process, and we want to do anything we can to help support our adoptive families during that difficult time.  Contact us any time!

We are a small, family-run agency, with a total of three employees in the US - Janice is one of the directors, and Kathy and Erica are the assistant directors. We each read every email that is sent to the office, and discuss every phone call that we receive. We have weekly meetings to go over the status of all of our pending adoptions, which allows each of us to get to know all of our adoptive parents on a first-name basis.  We are here to give you all the direction and support that you need.  In addition to our in-office staff, we also have numerous social workers throughout NY and NC who are ready to work with families in those states who need home study services.

Our network of families are always willing to assist with any questions you might have; before, during or after the adoption.  We provide all families interested in adopting thru our agency with a list of families who have recently adopted, along with their contact information.  Families can ask for an updated reference list at any time.

When working with birthmothers, we form a personal relationship with them, and that relationship is ongoing after the placement of their child.  We work with birthmothers to help them gain access to services in our community if they have needs we cannot meet, and provide them with support and encouragement to achieve their goals, above and beyond the placement of their child with an adoptive family.

We truly care about all of our adoptive families and birthparents, and our hope is to form a lasting relationship with each of them!
